Eating and Weight Disorders

Our Approach

Eating and weight disorders are not merely cosmetic issues, nor can they typically be treated by diet or exercise alone. They are chronic disease states that must be managed using a rational and scientifically based clinical approach. That’s why, Dr. Weisberg and his staff at Prevention Specialists, Ltd. (PSL) medicalize our approach to weight management and obesity using a highly individualized treatment plan that takes into account the whole patient, in which mental health and physical health are inseparable.

Dr. Weisberg, a Board Certified Internist and a Master Psychopharmacologist with 16 years of experience practicing General Medicine, specializes in the diagnosis and pharmacologic treatment of:

  • Overweight/Obesity - More
  • Binge Eating Disorder
  • Bulimia Nervosa
  • Anorexia Nervosa

Like any chronic medical disorder, a person’s weight problem must be viewed in the context of his or her “total health.” To get started, each individual undergoes a Comprehensive Physical Examination in which Dr. Weisberg thoroughly screens and examines patients for heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney, liver and thyroid disorders, as well as mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. All aspects of each person’s health – including co-morbidities, co-existing physical and mental health disorders, smoking, alcohol or drug abuse, family history and current medications – are accurately assessed to assure the safest and most successful outcome.

Once diagnostic screenings are completed, Dr. Weisberg prepares a detailed Health Report for each patient that includes:

  1. A General Health Assessment with emphasis on “active” medical problems.
  2. An outline of Health Goals for the commencing year.
  3. A Plan of Therapeutic Action, including lifestyle and pharmacologic interventions to help you achieve your goals.
  4. Complete Prescribing Information for any medication prescribed that reviews, in detail, exact dosages as well as all potential risks and adverse events of each medication prescribed.
  5. Precise instructions for Follow Up and contact information for reporting adverse events.

Your treatment program doesn’t end there; this is only the beginning. Dr. Weisberg emphasizes routine follow up and close clinical supervision of each individual’s progress. This entails reinforcing diet and lifestyle modifications as well as monitoring the safety and efficacy of any prescription medications designed to enhance the success of the treatment approach. Dr. Weisberg routinely works in conjunction with referring health care professionals including psychiatrists, primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, rheumatologists and other specialists to ensure that the needs of the “total patient” are addressed and weight maintenance goals are achieved.
